Most designers dream about the projects they'll create.

Very few think about the conversations they'll eventually have to lead.

Yet after a certain point in business, success has far less to do with selecting fabrics, creating beautiful spaces, or winning new projects. Instead, it comes down to something many principals quietly avoid: having the hard conversations.

The conversation with the team member who isn't performing.

The conversation about raising prices.

The conversation with a client whose expectations have drifted beyond the scope of the project.

The conversation about restructuring roles, setting boundaries, or making decisions that serve the future of the business rather than simply keeping everyone comfortable.

In this episode of Success by Design, I sit down with Michelle Lynne as we continue our new series, The Art Of The Principal, and tackle one of the most overlooked leadership skills in the design industry.

Because the truth is, most business problems don't appear overnight.

They often begin as conversations we delay.

A difficult employee issue becomes a culture problem.

A client boundary issue becomes a profitability problem.

A leadership decision we avoid becomes a source of frustration, burnout, and stress for everyone involved.

As principals, our role isn't simply to create beautiful work. It's to guide the business through the decisions that protect its future.

In this conversation, Michelle and I discuss why difficult conversations are often the key to stronger teams, healthier client relationships, and more sustainable growth. We explore the mindset shifts required to lead confidently, why avoiding discomfort often creates bigger challenges later, and how the best leaders learn to address issues before they become crises.

If you've ever found yourself putting off a conversation you know needs to happen, this episode will feel familiar.

And it may just be the conversation that changes how you lead your business moving forward.

Listen to the full episode to discover why the hard conversations you're avoiding may be the very ones that save your business.

I keep it honest—balancing work and chasing my two girls around.
