Your interior design business has a problem, so you decide to fix it.
The pipeline is slow, so you invest in marketing. You're overwhelmed, so you hire another employee. Profitability is disappointing, so you raise your rates.
But what happens when those changes don't produce the results you expected?
In Episode 135 of Success by Design, Katie Decker-Erickson explains why interior design firm owners often implement solutions before identifying the actual cause of their business problems—and how to build a more effective action plan.
The internet is full of business advice for interior designers. Post more on Instagram. Raise your rates. Hire a project manager. Introduce another service.
Some of that advice may be useful, but not every strategy works for every business.
Two designers may both say they need more money, but one may have an inconsistent pipeline while the other has plenty of clients and poor profit margins.
The first may need more qualified opportunities. The second may need to improve pricing, delivery efficiency, or service profitability.
The symptoms are similar. The solutions are not.
Katie uses a six-part approach to move from identifying a problem to implementing a solution.
First, identify the root cause using actual business data. Then determine which issue deserves attention first based on its potential impact.
Next, define a measurable outcome, choose a focused set of actions, assign responsibility and deadlines, and establish the metrics you'll use to evaluate progress.
The result is a practical prescription rather than another overwhelming list of business improvements.
As the owner of Colorworks Design, Katie understands that business strategies have to work alongside actual clients, projects, employees, and deadlines.
Sometimes the right solution is hiring. Other times, improving an existing process or creating a more consistent follow-up system can solve the problem without adding significant expense.
In this episode, Katie shares how her own firm recently improved its templates and avoided an unnecessary hire, demonstrating why it's important to diagnose the problem before investing in a solution.
Listen to Episode 135 of Success by Design to learn how to stop reacting to symptoms and start creating an actionable plan for your business.
