Is Your Interior Design Business Actually Profitable?

A million-dollar interior design firm can still be broke.

That's because revenue tells you how much money moved through a business. It doesn't tell you what was left, what it cost to produce that revenue, whether the company's services are profitable, whether cash will be available three months from now, or whether the business can actually afford its next hire.

That's why Financial Foundation is the first pillar we're examining in The Design Business Diagnostic.

A financially healthy design firm doesn't simply know its annual revenue. The owner understands what the company costs to operate each month, its break-even revenue, profitability by service, accounts receivable, upcoming cash requirements, and the numbers that should inform decisions about pricing, hiring, marketing, and growth.

And this is where many design firms misdiagnose the problem.

“I need more clients” may actually be a profitability problem. “I need to hire” may be a financial-capacity problem. “I need to raise my rates” may actually require understanding what the service costs to deliver before choosing another price.

More revenue poured into weak economics doesn't necessarily create a healthier business. It can create a larger version of the same problem.

In Episode 128 of Success by Design, I'm breaking down the five areas of your Financial Foundation that I believe every established design firm owner needs to understand. I'm also giving you a 10-question diagnostic you can use to see exactly how much financial visibility you currently have.

You don't need to become your accountant.

You need enough financial visibility to lead your company.
