The Business Advice I'd Ignore If I Were Growing a Design Firm

The Business Advice I’d Ignore If I Were Growing a Design Firm Today

There is no shortage of advice about how to grow an interior design business. Make more money. Add services. Hire when you're busy. Market more. Get more leads. Take the opportunities that come your way.

Some of that advice is genuinely useful when you're establishing your firm.

But if you're already running a six- or seven-figure interior design business, I'd start questioning a lot of it.

At this stage, I don't simply want more revenue. I want to know whether it's good revenue—profitable work from the right clients that fits our processes and has the potential to create future business.

I don't want more employees simply because everyone is busy. I want to understand what's creating the constraint before adding payroll.

And I don't necessarily want more leads. If five existing clients have multiple properties and already trust us, deepening those relationships may be significantly more valuable than finding one hundred new prospects.

That's the distinction I'm digging into in this week's episode of Success by Design.

I'm sharing the business advice I would personally ignore if I were growing an established design firm today, including how I'd think differently about revenue, hiring, services, founder involvement, marketing, opportunities, pricing, leads, and scale.

More importantly, I'm sharing what I'd prioritize instead.

Because once you've proven that your business works, growth stops being about doing more of everything. It becomes about knowing what deserves more of your resources—and what doesn't.
