When an interior design business owner is overwhelmed, the obvious solution often seems to be hiring.
But adding another person doesn't automatically create capacity.
Some successful design firm owners are dramatically under-supported. They're generating significant revenue while still sending invoices, scheduling meetings, following up on freight, managing procurement, and making nearly every decision themselves.
Other firms have the opposite problem: several people on the team, significant payroll, overlapping responsibilities, and an owner who still checks everyone's work.
Both owners are exhausted. But one may need more support while the other needs better structure.
Before deciding who to hire, Katie recommends asking:
What does my business need to stop depending on me?
Look at what you actually do during the week and separate it into three categories: work only you should do, work someone else could own, and work that shouldn't be happening at all.
That last category matters. Hiring someone to manage inefficient processes doesn't create leverage—it simply makes inefficiency more expensive.
The right Human Capital investment should remove a bottleneck, create clear ownership, support revenue, reduce risk, or free the owner to spend more time on the work that genuinely requires their experience and judgment.
That might mean hiring an employee. It could also mean part-time support, a fractional professional, bookkeeping service, procurement service, or another outsourced resource.
The goal isn't headcount. It's capacity.
And once someone is hired, real delegation requires more than handing them tasks. If every decision still requires the owner's approval, the owner remains the bottleneck. Pasted markdown
In Episode 130 of Success by Design, Katie breaks down Human Capital as the next pillar of The Design Business Diagnostic, including how to determine what your business actually needs, where your next hire may be hiding, and why both over-hiring and under-investing can damage profitability.
Listen to the full episode to learn how to build the right capacity into your interior design business—not simply a bigger team.

I’m an interior designer with an MBA and nearly 20 years in the industry. When I’m not leading my coast-to-coast, multi-million dollar firm, I love sharing real talk on the business of design, blending insights from 20 years as a business professor. I keep it honest—balancing work and chasing my two girls around.
